SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In a back-and-forth battle between two top-ranked teams, No. 22 Harvard men's tennis (12-4) was edged by No. 33 Drake, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic at San Diego State University.
The match game down to a three-set thriller at the No. 1 spot between senior captain Denis Nguyen (ranked No. 47) and No. 42 Alen Salibasic. The two split each of the first two sets that came down to the tiebreaker. Salibasic rallied from a defeat in the second set to earn the win, 7-6 (6-3), 6-7 (3-6), 6-3 and earn the victory for the Bulldogs.
Each doubles match was decided 6-4, as Harvard earned wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots to post an early advantage, 1-0. Junior Nicky Hu upset No. 38 Ben Lott in straight sets at the No. 2 position to push the Crimson ahead, 2-0 and sophomore Brian Yeung added another point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bayo Philips.
The Bulldogs (17-5) rattled off four-straight wins, including three that went to three sets, to advance to the next round of the classic.
The Crimson will be back in action tomorrow and await their opponent.
