CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After clinching its second
straight outright Ivy League title, the Harvard men’s tennis
team garnered seven All-Ivy League accolades, the league announced
Thursday. The seven All-Ivy nods represent the most for the
men’s tennis team since 2008.
Sophomore Denis Nguyen highlighted the honorees, garnering unanimous first-team accolades in both singles and doubles. Nguyen held down the top singles spot for the Crimson this season, going 4-3 in Ivy League matches and 8-8 in the spring schedule. His doubles partner, junior co-captain Casey MacMaster, was also a unanimous first-team selection at doubles. Nguyen and MacMaster combined for a near-perfect 6-1 mark in Ivy doubles play and totaled 13 wins to just three losses during the dual season.
Harvard’s final first-team honoree was sophomore singles specialist Shaun Chaudhuri, who garnered first-team accolades thanks to a 6-1 singles record at No. 2 in league action. The sophomore finished the regular-season dual slate with a 12-8 record, seeing action on the first and second singles courts. Senior co-captain Andy Nguyen earned a pair of All-Ivy nods, picking up second team honors for both singles and doubles. Nguyen was dominant for the Crimson at third and fourth singles, posting a 5-2 record in league matches, a 16-4 mark in dual matches and a 12-2 record at fourth singles. He also went 5-2 in Ancient Eight doubles action and 13-5 overall, playing primarily on the second court. Sophomore Alex Steinroeder rounded out the award winners, picking up second team singles accolades thanks to a 15-8 dual record on the third and fourth courts.
The Crimson now sets its sights on the NCAA tournament, where it will face off against Samford Friday, May 10 in a first-round matchup. Harvard will travel to Starkville, Miss., for the regional round with Mississippi State serving as the host institution.
