Cambridge, Mass- The Harvard men's tennis team wrapped up the final day of the Harvard Fall Chowder Fest this weekend, hosted at the Beren Tennis Center. Day three was good to Crimson competitors as six Harvard players earned victories in singles play.
Freshman Denis Nguyen was one of Harvard's most impressive players over the weekend tournament, recording a 2-1 record in singles action while teaming with junior Andy Nguyen during doubles, playing to a 2-1 mark. The Anaheim, Calif., native defeated Texas A&M senior Colin Hoover on Saturday, winning in two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. Nguyen would follow that up by defeating Michigan sophomore Justin Rossi in two.
Likewise in Doubles action, "team Nguyen" was the most successful Crimson tandem throughout the tournament. On Friday the duo defeated USC's Michael Grant and Eric Johnson 8-4. The pair would continue their strong play, prevailing over the Michigan doubles team of Alex Buzzi and Barret Franks, winning 9-8.
Michigan was well represented at the tournament as Evan King was named the Dale Junta '58 Winner of the Harvard Chowder Fest going undefeated in the top singles flight. Meanwhile King and teammate Shaun Bernstein won the doubles competition. Yannick Hanfmann of USC was honored with the Corey Wynn '40 Freshman of the Tournament going 3-0. The Trojan's Emilio Gomez would go onto win the second singles flight with a convincing 3-0 mark.
Crimson players totaled five doubles victories and 10 wins in singles action to kick off the season. Harvard men's tennis will now take a week off to prepare itself for the ITA All-Americans tournament.
