CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's squash team, ranked No. 5 in the Dunlop College Squash Association (CSA) Preseason Team Rankings, opens the 2011-12 season Saturday at 5 p.m. at No. 10 Williams. The Crimson is looking to open regular season on a high note after finishing fifth at the CSA Team Championship a year ago.
Last Time Out
Harvard ended the 2011-12 season with a victory over Cornell, 5-4, in the CSA Team Championship consolation final. The Crimson claimed its second consecutive fifth-place finish with the win.
The Crimson is 54-1 in its last 55 opening season matches dating back to 1956. Harvard has won 33 consecutive openers – including 25 shutouts - since falling, 5-4, at Western Ontario to open the 1977-78 campaign.
Harvard returns 13 players from last year's squad that finished 9-6 overall and 3-3 in Ivy play. The Crimson returns two of its top student-athletes, including Gary Power and Brandon McLaughlin. Power was a first team All-American selection and finished with a 10-5 record at the No. 1 position, while McLaughlin was 4-2 at No. 3 and 6-3 at No. 4 in 2010-11.
The Ephs are ranked No. 10 by the CSA and return seven of its top nine student-athletes from the 2010-11 team that finished with a 9-6 record. Will Morris, a first team All-NESCAC selection last year, returns in the No. 1 spot for Williams.
Harvard leads the all-time series against Williams, 64-1. The Crimson has won 59 consecutive matches over the Ephs, including a 8-1 decision in Cambridge last season.
The Crimson travels to Hanover, N.H. to take on No. 7 Dartmouth and No. 14 Middlebury Nov. 30.
