Men’s Soccer Announces Six Newcomers in Class of 2020

The group comes to Harvard from three states spanning the country (Gil Talbot).

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard men's soccer and Pieter Lehrer, the Virginia B. and James O. Welch, Jr. '52 Head Coach for Harvard Men's Soccer, have announced the incoming class of 2020; Taner Dogan, Matthew Glass, Philip Hausen, Landon Plunkett, Joel Serugo, and Asa Silverman. 

"We are very excited to welcome these six young men to Cambridge next fall," said Lehrer. "In this class it was important that we continue to add technical and athletic ability to our current roster. A big credit goes to Jonathan Delano, who did a tremendous job identifying and building personal relationships with these student-athletes. We feel that this class has the ability to make an instant impact on our program."

The men's team finished with a strong 9-6-2 record falling short of an Ivy Championship and NCAA berth. They hope to compete for an Ivy League title next season.

Taner Dogan | M | 6-0 | St. Louis, Mo. | Kirkwood

A three-year captain of the St. Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri Academy (2014-2016) … Trained with Dundee of Scottish Premier League and St. Mirren FC of Scottish Championship in summer 2015 … Trained regularly with St. Louis FC of USL during the summers of 2015-16 … AP Scholar with Honors.

"Taner is another attacking player that can play in a variety of positions. One of the top recruits in the country, Taner has developed greatly under the coaches at St. Louis Scott Gallagher and also abroad at St. Mirren." - Lehrer

Matthew Glass | M | 6-1 | Sacramento, Calif. | Jesuit

Named an Adidas High School Soccer All-America team selection (2015) … Selected as the Delta River League Soccer MVP (2015) … Earned recognition as a two-time PDP North Selection (2014-2015) … Two-time Sacramento United captain … Two-time Jesuit varsity captain … Led Jesuit to the Division I Sac-Joaquin Section Championship title in 2015 … Soccerloco Surf Cup semi-finalist with Sacramento United in 2015 … AP Scholar … Two-time recipient of the Outstanding Service Award (2013, 2015).

"Matt comes to us from Sacramento United, which is the same club that developed Nate Devine. Matt's coach, Shawn Blakeman, does a tremendous job of developing players that fit into our system. Matt is a box to box player who is great on both sides of the ball." - Delano

Philip Hausen | F | 5-11 | Redwood City, Calif. | Menlo

Three-year captain for the San Jose Earthquakes Pre-Academy for three years … Led team to third-place nationally with the Earthquakes in 2015 … Spent time volunteering for UNICEF … Spent one year with an organization that built computers for kids in Nepal.

"Philip is a left footed goal scorer, and was one of the top ranked recruits in the country for his graduating class.  We feel he has all the tools to be a great player at Harvard for the next four years" - Lehrer

Landon Plunkett | GK | 6-4 | Highland Village, Texas | Flower Mound Marcus

Earned All-District MVP (2016) … Named to the All-Region team (2015) … Selected to the All-District first team (2015) … Earned All-District Goalkeeper of the Year (2014) … Chosen as the Region III Golden Glove Award recipient (2015) …  Led team to Dallas Cup Championship and Region III Championship titles (2015) … Recorded 36 shutouts in 67 varsity games … 10 goals against and 12 shutouts in 21 games during senior season … Senior Class President … Junior Class VP … AP Scholar with Distinction … National Merit Commended Scholar … Honor Roll … National Honor Society Member … Spanish Honor Society Member … Mu Theta Member … Prolific volunteer in community.

Joel Serugo | D/M | 6-0 | North Hills, Calif. | Cate School

2014 Redington Cup Winner for Outstanding Sportsmanship and Athletic Ability … Four-time All-League team recipient … Recognized to the All-City team all four years … Earned CIF team honors sophomore and junior year … Varsity captain senior year … Three-time league champion … Helped lead team to CIF soccer playoffs all four years … Helped lead Santa Barbara Soccer Club to a State, Regional, and National League championship ... School's commencement speaker … Active in arts community.

Asa Silverman | M/F | 6-1 | South Pasadena, Calif. | South Pasadena

Led in assists for the U16 team for FC US Academy (2013-2014) … Part of the number one ranked L.A. Galaxy Academy for most goals of the season (2014-15) … Was the leading goal scorer and assists for FC Golden State Academy (2015-16) … Was the leading goal scorer for L.A. Galaxy Academy (2011-2012) … Spent summer 2014 in Germany playing for VBFL Osnabruck … Recognized to Deans List 2015 Connections Academy … Three-time recipient of the SPHS Spotlight of Excellence (2013-14, 2016) … Prolific volunteer in community.

"Asa is a fantastic player. He can play anywhere in the midfield line or as a forward. His personality and competitiveness on the field definitely intrigued us throughout the recruiting process. Asa spent time with the LA Galaxy and is currently leading his Development Academy team in scoring." - Delano
