TROY, N.Y.  –  Sophomore forward Casey Dornbach notched his first career hat trick to lead No. 8/10 Harvard men's ice hockey (6-0-0, 6-0-0 ECAC Hockey) to a 6-3 win at Rensselaer (4-6-1, 2-4-1 ECAC Hockey) on Friday night (Nov. 22) at Houston Field House.

Junior forward Henry Bowlby scored just :54 into the game, sophomore forward Baker Shore added a second period goal, and senior forward Frederic Gregoire scored in the third period to help Harvard seal the win.

First-year goaltender Mitchell Gibson made 15 saves, and senior goaltender Cameron Gornet stopped 22 shots in relief of Gibson, who left early in the second period due to injury.

Harvard got off to a flying start, with two goals in the opening two-plus minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Bowlby redirected a shot from first-year defenseman Henry Thrun past RPI goaltender Owen Savory (19 saves) at :54 to put the Crimson up early on.

Then just over a minute later, Dornbach was tripped up on a breakaway chance, setting up a penalty shot. Dornbach beat Savory low at the 2:26 mark, giving the Crimson its first penalty shot goal in 17 years and putting Harvard ahead 2-0.

The Engineers responded with goals from Cory Babichuk at 5:02 and Chase Zieky at 10:12 to tie the game. But Harvard added a late goal, as Shore's rebound chance off an initial shot by senior forward Colton Kerfoot put Harvard back ahead.

In a second period that saw the Engineers outshoot Harvard, 16-3, the Crimson maintained a one-goal lead thanks to timely saves from senior goaltender Cam Gornet, who replaced Gibson at the 1:50 mark of the frame.

RPI tied the game on a 3-on-2 down low finished off by Todd Burgess at 6:06 of the period.

But the Crimson regained the lead on a late power play chance, as a pass from sophomore forward Jack Drury found Dornbach in front alone, and the sophomore found the top corner to make it 4-3 at 16:03.

Dornbach completed the hat trick after Abruzzese found him all alone to the left of the net at 3:05 of the third period. The play started when Drury corralled a loose puck behind the net and found Abruzzese in front.

Gregoire forced another RPI turnover, intercepting a pass through the middle of the ice, cutting to the net alone and beating Savory with a backhander at 7:17 to make it 6-3.
