Pittsburgh Penguins Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –
Senior defenseman John Marino signed an entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team announced today (Aug. 8). Marino, who was acquired by the Penguins in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers on July 26, was originally drafted by the Oilers in the sixth round (154th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The North Easton, Mass. native was one of the Crimson's top defensemen during his three seasons at Harvard, earning All-Ivy League second team honors in 2017. He was a finalist for ECAC Hockey's Best Defensive Defenseman in 2018.

Marino completes his Harvard career with 42 points (seven goals, 35 assists) in 101 contests over three seasons. He skated in all but one game during his Harvard career, and had a plus-38 rating to help the Crimson become one of the top defensive units in the country.

A three-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic selection and Psychology concentrator, Marino was elected captain by his teammates at the conclusion of the 2018-19 campaign.
