Power Play Not Enough To Lift Men's Ice Hockey in 6-4 Loss at Brown

In his return to the Harvard lineup, junior forward Ryan Donato had a goal and an assist at Brown.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  – Despite three power play goals, Harvard men's ice hockey (13-11-4, 11-7-3 ECAC Hockey) fell 6-4, at Brown (7-17-4, 6-14-1 ECAC Hockey) on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.

Junior forward Ryan Donato had a goal and an assist in his return from the Winter Olympics, and sophomore forward Ty Pelton-Byce added a goal and assist to lead the Crimson, which had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Harvard came to life after a slow start, as Brown took an early 1-0 lead midway through the first period on Alex Brink's low wrist shot from the right circle at 9:08 of the opening period.

Junior goaltender Michael Lackey (23 saves) was up to the task on several Bears scoring chances in the frame, kicking away a deflection at the 13:00 mark and making a shoulder stop on another redirection minutes later.

Trey Dodd scored on a shorthanded breakaway to help Brown take a 2-0 lead early in the second period.

But Harvard responded on its next power play, as senior defenseman Wiley Sherman fed cross-ice to freshman forward Jack Badini in the slot, who beat Luke Kania (42 saves) with a quick low shot to pull the Crimson back within one at 6:04.

Freshman defenseman Reilly Walsh tied it on a 5-on-3, skating just outside the goal crease to put in a Zerter-Gossage rebound at 14:18 to make it 2-2.

Brown seized momentum in the third period, as Josh McArdle scored on a 3-on-1 chance, jamming in chance from right in front at 4:12.

Lafferty made it a two goal lead on a wrist shot from high slot just 1:32 later to make it 4-2 Bears. Then Donato scored his team-high 22nd goal of the season on the power play – a hard wrist shot from just outside the circle at 9:26.

Lafferty completed a hat trick with a 5-on-3 goal at 11:21 and another at even strength to at 16:12 to put the game out of reach. Pelton-Byce added a 6-on-5 goal at 18:13, putting in a long rebound.
