ALBANY, N.Y. – Harvard junior Merrick Madsen has been named ECAC Hockey Player and Goaltender of the Week, while defenseman John Marino was tabbed the Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office Saturday.
Madsen garnered the weekly honor after going 2-0-0 over championship weekend at the ECAC Hockey Tournament. He stopped 25-of-26 shots in both games against No. 19 Quinnipiac and No. 9 Cornell on his way to earning Tournament MOP honors. Madsen was also honored prior to the semifinals versus Quinnipiac as an All-ECAC Hockey third team selection. His 26 wins this season are the most by a Harvard goalie in a single season, and his current 14-game win streak is also a program record.
Marino earns his first weekly award from the conference, after finishing +4 with an assist in each game during championship weekend. The North Easton, Massachusetts native assisted on the would-be game-winner against Quinnipiac Friday and Michael Floodstrand's third period goal against Cornell. He was an All-Ivy League first team selection earlier this month.
Second-ranked Harvard opens the NCAA Tournament this Friday against No. 13/13 Providence at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
