Pair of NHL Draft Picks Highlight Men’s Hockey Class of 2017

Harvard welcomes nine freshman to the team in 2013-14.

Ted Donato, The Robert D. Ziff '88 Head Coach for Harvard Men's Hockey, announced the addition of nine freshmen to the men's hockey roster for the 2013-14 season. The freshman class hails from eight different states and provinces, and boasts two players drafted the NHL Entry Draft.

The group of nine freshmen will be joining a Crimson team that finished the 2012-13 season with a 10-19-3 overall record and 6-14-2 ECAC mark. Harvard had a number of notable victories last season, including a 4-1 win on the road over No. 10 Cornell in front of a national television audience and a pair of victories over local rival Boston University, including one in the Beanpot consolation game.

Incoming freshman Sean Malone was selected in the sixth round (No. 159 overall) by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft while classmate Alexander Kerfoot was taken in the fifth round (No. 150 overall) by the New Jersey Devils a year earlier.

Clay Anderson – Defenseman – 6-0/195 - Omaha, Neb./Shawnee Mission Northwest
Skated with the Cedar Rapids Roughriders (USHL) in 2012-13, collecting 23 points on four goals and 19 assists in 60 games … Russell Stover captain 2010 & 2011 … Bret Duffy Memorial Hockey Award winner in 2007 … Tier 1 Elite League leading defenseman scoring in 2011-12 … Midwest Regional champion with Russell Stover 2010-12 … Principal Honor Roll with 4.0 GPA … Also enjoys golf and biking.

Luke Esposito – Forward – 5-10/175 - Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School

Skated with the Vernon Vipers and Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL) in 2012-13 … London Junior Knights Minor Midget assistant captain in 2010-11 … 2012 Hill Academy Prep assistant captain … Voted Most Inspirational Player 2012-13 Prince George Spruce Knights … Leadership Award recipient at Hill Academy in 2011-12 … Brother, Eric , plays football at Wilfred Laurier … Also enjoys lacrosse and boxing.

Alexander Kerfoot – Forward - 5-10/175 - West Vancouver, B.C./Collingwood School
Drafted in the fifth round (No. 150 overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils … Played three seasons with the Coquitlam Express (BCHL), totaling 33-55-88 points in 72 career contests ….. 2010 and 2011 BCMML provincial champion … 2011 pacific regional champion and MVP … 2012 BCHL Rookie of the Year, Most Sportsmanlike Player and first-team all-star … BCMML Record for points in a season (108 points in 38 games in 2011) … Telus Cup Nation Championship MVP in 2011 … Captained tennis team as a junior … Senior team captain in 2011 and 2012 … Five straight tennis provincial titles and three top doubles team awards … Collingwood School honour roll grades 9-12 … Organized an intramural football club at Collingwood School that still runs … Also enjoys golf, soccer, and tennis.

Sean Malone – Forward – 6-0/190 - West Seneca, N.Y./Nichols School
Selected in the sixth round (No. 159 overall) by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft … Played 15 games with the U.S. National Development Team (USHL) in 2012-13, totaling 5-8-13 points … Lettered in his sophomore and junior years in hockey, soccer, and lacrosse … 2011-12 Varsity Soccer team MVP and first team all-state … 2011-12 varsity hockey team MVP … 2011-12 varsity lacrosse all-league … Played for the 2012-13 USA U18 team and competed at IIHF World U18 Hockey Championships in Sochi, Russia, winning silver medal.

Tyler Moy – Forward – 6-1/195 - San Diego Calif./Millard North
Played with the Omaha Lancers (USHL) in 2012-13, totaling 23 points on four goals and 19 assists in 64 games … Drafted second round in the USHL Futures Draft by the Omaha Lancers in 2011 … Illinois State Champion 18 AAA in 2012 with the Chicago Fury … 4.0 honor Cord and President's Education Award in 2013 … Omaha Lancers Dillon Hayes Humanitarian Award recipient in 2013 … Also enjoys drawing and art … Father, Randy (Western Michigan '76) and uncle Rodger (Michigan Tech '80) were both Division I hockey assistant captains.

Victor Newell – Defenseman – 5-10/185 - Burnaby, B.C./St Thomas More Collegiate
Skated with the Waterloo Blackhawks (USHL) in 2012-13, totaling 7-19-26 points in 48 games … Also spent time with the Omaha Lancers (USHL) from 2011-13 and Nanaimo Clippers (BCHL) from 2009-11 … Unsung Hero Award from Nanaimo Hockey Club in 2011 … Best Defenseman Award and Rookie of the Year Award recipient from Nanaimo Hockey Club in 2010 … Three BC Provincial Champions titles … Distinction Honor Roll from St Thomas More Collegiate … Member of the student council at St Thomas More Collegiate … Sister, Kimberly, is starting goaltender on Princeton women's hockey team … Also enjoys golf, reading, music, and hanging out with friends.

Saw action with the Omaha Lancers (USHL), the Coquitlam Express (BCHL) and the Chilliwack Chiefs (BCHL) in 2012-13 … Lettered in hockey and cross country at Salisbury School … Named to the 2011-12 All-New England Hockey Team … Helped team to back-to-back Founders League championships in 2011 and 2012 … Earned first honors in all three trimesters of 2011-12 academic year … Serves as volunteer skating instructor for faculty/children in Salisbury community … Also enjoys fishing, boxing and golf.
