CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –
Senior captain Danny Biega of the Harvard men’s hockey team has been named the recipient of the 2013 Joe Tomasello “Unsung Hero” Award, the New England Hockey Writers announced Tuesday. Biega was one of just three ECAC players to be honored by the group’s yearly awards.

Biega finished a successful four-year career in Cambridge in March, playing the fifth-most games of any player in program history. He finished his collegiate career with 85 points on 28 goals and 57 assists in 132 games. His career games-played mark ranks eighth all-time in Harvard history, one ahead of his brother, Alex, who played from 2006-10. Danny served as the 120th captain of Harvard hockey in 2012-13.

As a senior, the Montreal, Que., native picked up the third All-Ivy League honor of his career with selection to the all-league second team. Biega skated in all 32 contests for the Crimson as a senior, and regularly logged the most minutes on the team during games. A finalist for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award, Biega finished the season with nine points on two goals and seven assists, with two of those helpers coming during Ivy League play.

Biega signed a three-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL immediately following the completion of the 2012-13 season, and reported to the team’s AHL affiliate Charlotte Checkers.
