CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Sophomore Raphael Girard of the Harvard men’s hockey team has been named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Month, the league office announced Friday.
Girard was unbeaten at 3-0-2 in seven February appearances, posting a 1.75 goals-against average and .944 save percentage. He allowed surrendered only 10 goals on 180 shots, and five of those scores came on opponents’ power plays. He made 27 or more saves in each of his four starts and stopped all 26 shots he faced in a relief win against Quinnipiac Feb. 3. Girard stopped a month-high 32 shots in a 3-3 tie at Brown Feb. 17.
The Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., native stopped 58 of 61 shots to come his way over the final weekend of the regular season Feb. 24-25, leading Harvard to wins against St. Lawrence and Clarkson to clinch an ECAC playoff bye. Two of the three goals he allowed came on the power play. Girard made 31saves in a 4-1 defeat of the Saints, including 15 on SLU power plays and 14 during the scoreless second period. He then logged 27 stops and an assist on the tying goal in a 3-2, comeback win against the Golden Knights.
Girard was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week for his performance against St. Lawrence and Clarkson. It is the second monthly honor for the Crimson this year. Patrick McNally was previously named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for November.
The Crimson (10-8-11, 8-5-9 ECAC Hockey), seeded third in the ECAC Hockey Championship, begins the tournament with a three-game quarterfinal series March 9-11 at Bright Hockey Center. The winner of that series will advance to the league semifinals March 16 in Atlantic City, N.J. Quarterfinal tickets are available here.
