Nine Accomplished Freshmen to Bolster Harvard Men’s Hockey Roster

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Nine outstanding freshmen have enrolled at Harvard and will join the Crimson men's hockey team in 2011-12. The group includes five National Hockey League draftees, three local all-stars and three standouts from outside the United States.

Ted Donato '91, The Robert D. Ziff '88 Head Coach for Harvard Men's Ice Hockey, welcomes the group of five forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender from four U.S. states, Canada, the Czech Republic and Switzerland:

Colin Blackwell • Forward • 5-10/175 • Right Shot • North Andover, Mass./St. John's Preparatory School
Selected in the seventh round (194th pick overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks … A four-year letterwinner, three-year most valuable player and two-year captain for the St. John's Prep hockey team … 2010-11 Massachusetts High School Hockey Coaches Association Robbie Ftorek Player of the Year … 2010-11 ESPN Boston's "Mr. Hockey" Player of the Year … Two-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic and Boston Herald Dream Team selection and Salem Evening News Player of the Year … 2010-11 Catholic Conference co-MVP and CC all-star the previous two years … Set a single-season school scoring record with 66 points (33 goals, 33 assists) as a senior and graduated as fourth-leading scorer all-time … Led team to final of 2011 Super 8 State Championship with tournament-high 11 points … Received St. John's Prep and Moynihan Lumber Student-Athlete of the Year awards and was named to Headmaster's List every year … A three-year letterwinner and senior-year captain in lacrosse … Named to Catholic Conference lacrosse all-star first team in 2010 and '11 … Led lacrosse team to state championship as a junior and runner-up finish as a senior.

Selected in the seventh round (203rd pick overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs … A two-year captain and four-year Minnesota state tournament participant and sectional champion with Edina … Led the Hornets to 2009-10 state title and two Classic Lake Conference titles … In 2010-11, named a finalist for Mr. Hockey and team most valuable player while earning all-conference and All-Metro honors … Selected to all-tournament team at 2010 state tournament and earned all-conference honorable mention … Earned Edina High's Athlete Scholar award and outstanding physical education award and was selected as an Edina Scholar … Interests include golf and traveling … Brother, Marshall, is a junior forward for the Crimson.

Played the last two seasons for the Burlington Cougars of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, leading the club to consecutive Western Conference championships … Selected to Team East for the Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects Game … Named Cougars' Academic Player of the Year … Played center for the T.A. Blakelock varsity basketball team in the ninth and 10th grades … A member of the High School Honour Society and National Honour Society … Interests include golf, swimming and road hockey.

A two-year captain and three-year Elite Junior A champion with the ZSC Lions … Twice played for Team Switzerland in the World Junior Championship, helping the Swiss finish fourth in Saskatoon, Sask., in 2010 and fifth in Buffalo, N.Y., in '11 … Born in Manitoba before moving to Switzerland, where father, Mark, coached hockey … Interests include golf, tennis and piano.

Patrick McNally • Defenseman • 6-2/190 • Left Shot • Glen Head, N.Y./Milton Academy (Mass.)
Selected in the fourth round (115th pick overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks … Spent two years at Milton Academy, lettering both years in hockey and lacrosse … Captained the team to a New England prep championship as a senior … A two-time selection to the All-New England first team … 2009-10 U.S. Hockey Report Defenseman of the Year and 2010-11 Hockey Night in Boston Prep School Player of the Year … As a senior, made the All-Independent School League team in hockey and earned All-ISL honorable mention in lacrosse … Played attack in lacrosse … Father, Tom, was captain of the Columbia football team … Sister, Delia, plays ice hockey at Vermont.

Selected in the sixth round (161st pick overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota Wild … A three-year letterwinner and two-year most valuable player on the Loomis Chaffee hockey team … Named a New England prep all-star as a senior after making more than 1,000 saves with a .918 save percentage … Played in 2011 U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp … Helped U.S. National Under-18 Team win silver medal at 2010 Ivan Hlinka Tournament … Named Player of the Game in two of his three Ivan Hlinka starts, including a 1-0 loss to Canada in championship game … An all-conference selection for 2010-11 … Selected to Team Connecticut pick in '09 and '10 … A four-year letterwinner in baseball … Captained the baseball team as a senior.

Played in 2010-11 with the Omaha Lancers and Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League after previously starring for St. Sebastian's School … An all-league selection in senior year of 2009-10 at St. Sebastian's … Earned the Kevin T. Mutch Award as the school's junior who demonstrates leadership, school spirit and athletic success … Most valuable player of the Valicenti Cup, the annual game between St. Sebastian's and Thayer Academy … National Honor Society member … Volunteered, with Sioux Falls teammates, at area elementary school … Interests include golf, video games and music … Father, Tom, played hockey at Boston University, serving as co-captain of the Terriers in 1982-83, and went on to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Mike Seward • Forward • 6-2/206 • Left Shot • Winchester, Mass./Winchester • Boston (EJHL)
Skated in 2010-11 with the Boston Junior Bruins of the Eastern Junior Hockey League, registering 21 goals and 34 points in 45 games … A four-year letterman at Winchester High School and captain of 2009-10 league-championship team … Graduated as school's all-time second-leading scorer with 133 points on 70 goals and 63 assists in 78 games … In both 2009-10 and 2008-09, named Middlesex League Most Valuable Player, all-league, The Boston Globe All-Scholastic/Athlete of the Year and Boston Herald All-Scholastic … In 2009-10, earned Boston Bruins Hockey Sportsmanship Award and named Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Association All-Star, Daily Times Chronicle All-Star and team MVP … Helped Winchester reach Super 8 tournament in junior and senior seasons … Named to Hockey Night in Boston All-Star squad in 2009 and participated in the USA Under-16 National Development Camp … One of two WHS students to receive Massachusetts Certificate of Academic Excellence Award and one of five to earn the Senior Class Award for top grade-point averages … MSCHA Academic All-Star … National Honor Society and French Honor Society member … Received awards for achievement in French, science, math and economics … Interests include fishing, baseball, golf, traveling and swimming.
