Men’s Fencing Dominates at St. John’s Invitational with 5-0 Record

QUEENS, N.Y. – The No. 5 Harvard men's fencing team had a standout performance at the St. John's Invitational this Saturday, Jan. 20. Sweeping all five opponents, including host No. 8 St. John's (14-13), No. 2 Columbia (14-13), No. 1 Notre Dame (15-12), No. 2 Ohio State (14-13) and No. 4 Penn State (14-1), the Crimson improved its overall record for the 2017-18 season to 9-1.

Junior Eli Dershwitz led the team with a 14-1 record and a plus-38 touch differential. Dershwitz annihilated in the first four rounds, defeating members from St. John's, Columbia, Notre Dame and Ohio State all by a 3-0 margin. Against all Columbia opponents he faced, Dershwitz went 5-0 in touches.

Duncan Rheingans-Yoo topped foil fencers with a 11-4 record. Including a 3-0 sweep of St. John's, Rheingans-Yoo defeated all other opponents with a 2-1 mark, tallying a plus-nine touch differential.

Placing second on the team in touch differential with plus-23, George Haglund registered a 9-6 mark across the tournament. Haglund pulled through at the end for foil, sealing a 3-0 win over Penn State.

What's Next
The Crimson heads home for the first and only time this season, hosting NYU on Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. The bout will be broadcast on the Ivy League Network.
