Cai Earns Silver at North American Cup

The freshman finished in second place to Karol Metryka of Penn State (Gil Talbot).

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Harvard men's and women's fencing teams sent eight members to the North American Cup presented by USA Fencing in Columbus, Ohio Jan. 6-9.

Freshman Erwin Cai finished the weekend with a silver medal in the Junior Sabre event. Cai tallied a +16 touch-differential, comprised over 27 touches scores over 11 touches received. In his pool of six competitors, Cai earned a winning percentage of 83.

Duncan Reinghas-Yoo earned a fifth-place finish in the senior foil event, earning a +23 touch differential after sweeping his pool, 6-0. Reinghas-Yoo scored 30 touches and received seven.

Another newcomer to Harvard, freshman Marta Losota finished in seventh place in the women's junior sabre. Lasota registered a +13 touch differential from 28 touches scored and 15 touches received. 

Other members of the Crimson to compete included Matthew Branman and George Haglund in the men's division I foil, MacKenzie Lawrence in the women's division I foil, Gabby Tartatovsky in the women's division I sabre and Eric Zhao in the men's division I sabre.

Harvard will take a break from action, stepping back onto the mat on January 21 at St. John's against Columbia, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and the host Red Storm.
