Men’s Fencing Earns a 4-1 Record at Tradition Tournament

Freshman Erwin Cai led the Crimson with an 11-4 mark and a +32 differential (Gil Talbot).

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Harvard men's fencing team opened its 2016-17 campaign at the Tradition Tournament at Sacred Heart this past weekend. The team finished the weekend with a 4-1 overall record after facing competitors from Vassar, Penn State, Sacred Heart, NJIT and NYU.

The underclassmen led the men's team over the course of the tournament. Sophomore Albert Chien led the charge for epee, finishing the weekend 10-5 with a +12-touch differential. Freshman George Haglund paced the foil fencers, finishing 10-2 with a +23-touch differential, while freshman Erwin Cai finished the weekend with a team-best +32 differential and an 11-4 record.  

The Crimson (4-1) earned a 24-3 victory over Vassar in the first round of the tournament, including a 9-0 sweep in foil. The men continued on to a rigorous second round against Penn State, ultimately winning by three points, 15-12.

In the third round, Harvard continued on their sweep, crushing Sacred Heart, 19-8. The sabre fencers captured a 9-0 mark. The Crimson faced NJIT in the fourth round, escaping with a 16-11 lead.  

Harvard closed out the tournament falling 14-13 to NYU, despite 5-4 marks in epee and sabre.

The men's team will take a break from action and will return on January 21st at St. John's against Columbia, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and the host Red Storm.
