No. 1 Men’s Lightweight Crew Stays Unbeaten, Wins Haines Cup at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 1 Harvard men's lightweight crew team kept its unbeaten mark intact Saturday on Severn River, defeating No. 7 Navy and No. 6 Delaware for the Haines Cup.

Conditions on the Severn River in Annapolis, Maryland featured a six to 10 mile per hour tailwind against incoming tide. The tailwind increased throughout the morning.

In the first varsity eight race, Harvard led down the stretch but needed one final surge over the final couple hundred meters to hold off a charging Navy to win the Haines Cup by 1.2 seconds.

The Crimson's second varsity eight overcame a slight Navy lead near the end of its race and passed the Midshipmen late to garner a victory of its own. Harvard's fifth varsity engaged in a very competitive race against Navy to begin the day and was able to come away victorious with a power move at the finish to edge Navy.
