No. 2 Men’s Lightweights Wins Points Title, Takes Fourth at Varsity Eight at IRAs

Harvard's varsity four with no coxswain celebrates its national title (Harvard men's lightweight crew).

FOLSOM, Calif. – The second-ranked Harvard lightweight crew took home the overall team points title, while the varsity four with no coxswain won the gold medal at the 2017 IRA National Championships, held on Lake Natoma.

The Crimson's varsity four captured the silver medal, and the varsity eight placed fourth.

"We are very proud of today's performance and the overall direction of our program," said Billy Boyce, The Friends of Harvard Lightweight Rowing Coach for Men's Lightweight Crew. "There are several young student-athletes coming back and we are welcoming a great incoming class. The future is bright for Harvard men's lightweight crew."

In the grand final of the varsity four with no coxswain, Harvard's boat, which consisted of Andrew Sterne, Andrew Wilkins, Chris Wales and Mike Genovesi, overcame an early lead by Cornell and cruised to an open water victory to win the gold medal. The Crimson crossed the finish line in 6:06.700, followed by Princeton (6:10.114) and the Big Red (6:17.729). 

Harvard's varsity four edges Dartmouth by less than three-tenths of a second to earn the silver medal in the grand final. Navy places first with a mark of 6:26.595, while the Crimson was second in 6:32.351, edging the Big Green (6:32.587).

The 1V8 nearly placed third, but Yale finished the course in 5:43.072, just ahead of Harvard, which crossed in 5:43.321. Cornell captured the gold in the event in 5:40.172, while Penn was second with a time of 5:41.087.
