Harvard has three boats racing in Sunday's grand finals (Zack Williamson).
FOLSOM, Calif. -- The No. 2 Harvard lightweight crew sent three boats to Sunday's grand finals on day one of the 2017 IRA National Championships, held on Lake Natoma in Folsom, California.
In the varsity eight heat, the Crimson grabbed third place, finishing just behind Penn and Yale with a mark of 5:50.976. The Quakers won the heat in 5:48.994, while Yale was second in 5:50.512, and Navy came in fourth in 5:57.222. With the third-place finish, Harvard advances to Sunday's grand final, scheduled for 12:05 p.m. PST.
Columbia, Cornell, Penn, Princeton and Yale will join the Crimson in the varsity eight grand final.
In the coxed four event, Harvard overcame an early deficit to Columbia and won the heat by a mark of 6:41.024 to reach Sunday's final. The Lions took second in 6:44.068, followed by Princeton in 6:45.472. Harvard will face Columbia, Dartmouth, Navy, Penn and Princeton in Sunday's grand final at 9:10 a.m. PST.
Harvard took first in its heat in the varsity four race with no coxswain to also earn a spot in the grand final. The Crimson led for almost the entire race, crossing in 6:20.356, well ahead of Penn (6:27.784). Sunday's grand final will also include Cornell, Dartmouth, Navy, Penn and Princeton. The grand final is slated for 8:20 a.m. PST.
