CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 4 Harvard lightweight crew reclaimed the Goldthwait Cup for the first time in three years, as the Crimson won the 1V8, 2V8, 4V8 and 5V8 races against No. 1 Yale and No. 4 Princeton Saturday morning.

On a warm day that began with a calm wind that gradually increased to a slight headwind, Harvard (9-1) used a strong second 500 meters to take the lead and earned victory in the first varsity eight. The Crimson crossed the line in 5:55.6, followed by Yale (5:57.5) and Princeton (5:59.9) in a competitive race.

In the 2V8, Harvard also won by a tight margin, holding off Yale with a mark of 5:59.4 to 6:01.0. The Tigers finished a close third in 6:02.1.

Yale edged Princeton in the third varsity eight race, 6:06.4 to 6:07.6, respectively, with the Crimson coming in third at 6:09.9. Harvard took the final two races of the day, winning the 4V8 by less than one-tenth of a second, 6:10.367 to 6:10.453, over Princeton. Yale placed third (6:28.2). The Crimson 5V edged Princeton, 6:29.5 to 6:40.1, with the Crimson 6V coming in a close third at 6:42.7.

Following the racing, the Crimson dedicated a new boat in honor of John Higginson '62, who served as the Harvard men's lightweight coach from 1973-78, posting a 40-3 overall record.

The Crimson will now prepare for the Eastern Sprints Championships, held on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts Sunday, May 14.
