No. 2 Harvard Lightweight Crew Takes Four Races, Biglin Bowl

The Harvard second varsity won for the fourth time in as many races this spring.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The No. 2 Harvard lightweight varsity eight won by 1.9 seconds to claim the Biglin Bowl and cap a four-victory morning for the Crimson against No. 8 Dartmouth and No. 14 MIT Saturday on the Charles River Basin.

Harvard (6-0) also won the second and third varsity and freshman eight races, while Dartmouth claimed the thrilling second freshman event. A strong tailwind made for choppy water and tough conditions throughout the morning.

The varsity victory was Harvard's 48th in the Biglin Bowl series, compared to five for MIT and four for Dartmouth. The Big Green and Crimson pulled away from MIT and raced level for 1,300 meters. Harvard, however, inched away as the final quarter of the race approached and eventually built a six-seat lead. Dartmouth maintained contact but could not catch up. Harvard finished in 5:49.5, Dartmouth in 5:51.4 and MIT nearly a half-minute back in 6:19.0.

Dartmouth stayed close to Harvard in most of the other races as well. The Crimson second varsity built a six-seat advantage in the first half of its race and gained two more seats in the next 500. The Big Green, however, countered quickly to keep Harvard from getting open water and finished 2.8 seconds off the Crimson's winning time of 6:03.0.

Harvard's freshman eight moved away from Dartmouth in the second half of the race, but there was still overlap between the boats in the final 100 meters, when the Big Green caught a crab and lost ground. The Crimson won by 6.8 seconds in 6:15.4. The third varsity earlier cruised to a 12.5-second victory in 6:24.5.

An equipment problem with the Harvard boat delayed the second freshman race until later in the morning, but the wait yielded a competitive contest as all three boats finished within 1.4 seconds of one another. MIT's second varsity/second freshman entry appeared to have the upper hand heading into the final strokes, but Dartmouth surged to the win. A photo finish left the Engineers in second ahead of the Crimson, which finished in 6:40.5.
