CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Closing out the regular season undefeated, the No. 3 Harvard men's heavyweight crew team took down No. 6 Northeastern in its final race on the Charles River today, May 4. Conditions featured flat water with little to no wind.
Helping capture Harvard's 27th Smith Cup from Northeastern, the Crimson's varsity eight dominated its race against the Huskies, clocking in at 5:33.2 for the first-place finish. The Crimson came out fast out the gates, building an early four-seat lead. Later down the stretch, Harvard pulled away from the Huskies, finishing a full boat length ahead of Northeastern to seal the victory.
Harvard swept the remaining races on the day, as the Crimson's second, third and fourth varsity eight boats each picked up wins. The Crimson's second varsity eight recorded a 2.7 second victory over the Huskies, clocking in at 5:44.8. Harvard's third varsity narrowly edged Northeastern's boat by 1.6 seconds at 5:51.9, while the fourth varsity boat finished at 6:11.1, 5.5 seconds ahead of the Huskies.
