PRINCETON, N.J. – On day one of the 2018 IRA National Championships, No. 4 men's heavyweight crew sent all three eight-man boats to the semifinals.
The varsity eight took first in their heat with a time of 5:43.385, besting second-place brown by 1.5 seconds. The time puts them in the second semifinal on Saturday, with a race against Yale, Syracuse and Princeton set to begin at 8:55 a.m.
Also earning a first-place heat finish, the second varsity rowed to a time of 5:48.319. The group advances to a 9:35 a.m. semifinal on Saturday against Yale, Dartmouth and Northeastern.
The third varsity eight tallied the second-fastest time of the day, crossing the finish line atop its heat with a time of 5:52.758. Beating runner-up Princeton by three seconds, Harvard will face Yale, Boston University and Dartmouth in its semifinal at 10:25 a.m. Saturday.
Taking fifth-place in its opening heat, the varsity four clocked in at 6:42.097, just behind Holy Cross and Boston University. The squad looked to better its time in the repechage, but made its way across the line with a nearly identical 6:42.109.
