WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – On the first day of the IRA National Championships on Mercer Lake in New Jersey, the Harvard heavyweight varsity eight advanced to the semifinals with a second-place finish in its heat.

The Crimson, stroked by Charlie Risbey and coxed by Cole Durbin, will face Northeastern, Washington and Yale in the semifinals at 10:24 a.m. Saturday. The top three boats in the race will move on to the grand final.

Harvard started strong, keeping pace with Cal through the first 1,000 meters. At the midway point, the Crimson help their ground to keep a surging Columbia and Wisconsin at bay, before finishing in 5:59.051. Cal finished in 5:51.813 and Columbia was open water behind the Crimson.

The second varsity won its repechage over Navy and Hobart to qualify for the semifinals tomorrow, finishing with a time of 5:57.655.
