PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Third-ranked Brown held off a strong sprint from the No. 4 Harvard heavyweight varsity eight to defeat the Crimson by one second and claim the Stein Cup Saturday evening on the Seekonk River, ending Harvard’s streak of wins against 14 straight dual opponents.

The Bears also won the second and third varsities, while Harvard took the freshman eight and second freshman/fourth varsity eight races. The regatta was contested with a crosswind and good water conditions. It was a matchup of the two highest-ranked crews in the East, the same two that were the region’s fastest last season.

“Brown is very strong and raced extremely well,” said Harry Parker, The Thomas Bolles Head Coach for Harvard Men’s Crew. “We need to get a little faster.”

The Bears (3-0) and Crimson were even off the start, and Harvard moved to a two-seat advantage in the race’s first 500 meters. Brown pulled even around the 1,000-meter mark and gained an eight-seat advantage in the third 500. The Crimson closed in the final 30 strokes, but Brown held on for a one-second win in 5:41.5.

“It was a very hard-fought race,” Parker said.

For the sixth straight season, the Stein Cup went to the home team, and Brown trimmed Harvard’s cup-series lead to 37-9. The Bears win against the Crimson in 2007 was Harvard’s was the Crimson’s last previous dual defeat.

The Brown second and third varsities won by 2.1 and 3.2 seconds, respectively. The Harvard freshman eight cruised to a 12.3-second victory, and the second freshmen beat Brown’s freshman/varsity combination boat by nearly five seconds.
