Men’s Basketball Announces Class of 2022

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Adding a talented group of four to a strong core of returning players, the Harvard men's basketball program has announced the class of 2022: Kale Catchings, Mason Forbes, Spencer Freedman and Noah Kirkwood.

"We are thrilled to welcome Noah, Mason, Kale and Spencer to our institution and program," said Tommy Amaker, The Thomas G. Stemberg '71 Family Endowed Coach for Harvard Men's Basketball. "It makes us incredibly proud that they have chosen Harvard to continue their academic and basketball careers. I am excited to watch this class grow and prosper within our program and the greater Harvard community in ways beyond basketball."

Harvard captured its sixth Ivy League championship in 2017-18, was the top seed in the Ivy League Tournament and advanced to the NIT for the second time in program history.

Kale Catchings | Forward | 6-6 | 220 | O'Fallon, Missouri | Liberty
One-year starter for Liberty, previously a three-year starter at Christian Brothers College HS … Played for Bradley Beal Elite (formerly St. Louis Eagles) on Nike EYBL circuit … HS team captain in 2016-17 and 2017-18 … Two-time all-state and all-district honoree in 2017 and 2018 … All-MCC in 2016 and 2017, All-GAC in 2018 … GAC Central Player of the Year in 2018 … Holds Liberty career record for points per game, as well as season records for total points, field goals made, free throws made and rebounds … Valedictorian at Liberty … Aunt, Tamika Catchings, was a four-time Olympic gold medalist in basketball, and a WNBA MVP and champion … Grandfather, Harvey Catchings, played in the NBA for 11 seasons.

Mason Forbes | Forward | 6-8 | 200 | Folsom, Calif. | Folsom
Four-year letterwinner and three-year starter for Folsom … Played for Oakland Soldiers on Nike EYBL Circuit … 2017 Nike EYBL Peach Jam Champion … Two-time Folsom team captain from 2016-18 … 2017-18 All-NorCal, all-city and all-league first team, SFL League MVP … 2016-17 all-city and all-league first team … 2015-16 all-city honorable mention, all-league second team … Led team to Sierra Foothill League Championship three times, with 103 total wins over four seasons … Father, Sterling Forbes Jr., played at Texas State and professionally in Argentina and with the Harlem Globetrotters … Grandfather, Sterling Forbes Sr., was an All-America selection for Pepperdine, a 1960 draft pick of the Los Angeles Lakers, and spent three years with the Harlem Globetrotters.

Spencer Freedman | Guard | 6-0 | 170 | Pacific Palisades, Calif. | Mater Dei
Three-year starter for Mater Dei and one-year starter at Santa Monica HS … Played for California Supreme on Nike EYBL Circuit … Three-time Mater Dei team captain … Three-time Trinity League MVP from 2015-18, the first ever to accomplish the feat … First team all-state selection in 2016-17 and 2017-18 … First team All-CIF in 2015-16 and 2016-17, led team to 2018 CIF Championship … 2018 CIF Player of the Year … Had #12 jersey retired by Mater Dei … City of Palms All-Tournament team and 3-point shootout champion … Two-time MVP of Mission Viejo Tournament … Grandfather, Irving Fuller, was a 1957 graduate of Harvard.

Noah Kirkwood | Guard | 6-7 | 215 | Ottawa, Ontario | Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.)
Five-year starter and letterwinner at Northfield Mount Hermon (2017-18) and Ashbury College HS (2013-17) … Played for Brookwood Elite on Adidas Circuit … All-city selection from 2013-17, 2017 Provincial MVP … All-Canadian selection in 2016-17 … Named to all-state and all-league teams in 2018 … All-time Ashbury school record holder in points, rebounds, steals, assists and wins. Went undefeated in varsity city games at Ashbury (40-0) … Gold medalist with Canada at FIBA U-19 World Championships … Silver medalist with Canada at FIBA Americas U-16 Championships … Three-time Canadian junior national team member (U-16, U-17, U-19) … Father, Art Kirkwood, played basketball at Ottawa University.
