Junior goalkeeper Libby Manela and junior forward Kathleen Young will lead the Crimson field hockey team in 2018.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior goalkeeper Libby Manela and junior forward Kathleen Young were named captains of the 2018 Harvard field hockey team, head coach Tjerk van Herwaarden announced today.
Manela started nine games for the Crimson in 2017 and was excellent in net, finishing the year 5-4-0 with a 1.02 goals-against average (fourth, NCAA) and .744 save percentage, including three shutouts. For her career, Manela is 15-6-0 with a 1.32 goals-against average and .688 save percentage, and helped lead Harvard to the 2016 Ivy League championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Young, a native of Essex Junction, Vt., was a Longstreth/NFHCA All-Northeast Region selection and had a career year for Harvard despite missing the final six games of the season with an injury. Through 11 games, she led Harvard with 23 points (10 goals, three assists), still finishing the season third on the team in points. She was a Second Team All-Ivy selection. In 46 games played over her career, Young has 18 goals and nine assists.
Harvard finished the 2017 season with a 13-4 record (6-1 Ivy League) setting a new program record for wins in a season.
