CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The defending Ivy League champion Harvard field hockey team has announced its schedule for the 2017 season. A trip to the West Coast, games against two final four qualifiers and eight home games at Berylson Family Field Hockey Field highlight the slate.
Harvard is coming off one of its most successful seasons in its history in 2016. The Crimson went unbeaten in the Ivy League for the first-time ever, won its fourth conference title, and qualified for its fifth NCAA Tournament. Its 12 wins matched a program-best, and head coach Tjerk van Herwaarden was named Ivy League and NFHCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year.
The Crimson will begin its season when the calendar flips to September, playing a trio of games in California. Harvard's season opener occurs Sept. 1, facing UC Davis, with a matchup at Pacific the following afternoon. A battle at Stanford Sept. 4 rounds out the trip west. Harvard has not played UC Davis since 2009 and has not faced Stanford since 2011.
Berylson Field hosts its first game of the season Sept. 10 with a visit from 2016 final four participant Connecticut. The out-of-conference slate continues with a crosstown visit to Northeastern Sep. 15 and a home duel against New Hampshire Sept. 17.
Harvard begins its Ivy title defense with a road contest at archrival Yale Sept. 23. It's a quick turnaround for the Crimson, who then hosts Lafayette in Cambridge Sept. 24. After a midweek game at Holy Cross Sept. 27, the Crimson jumps back into Ivy play with Penn and Brown traveling to Berylson Sept. 30 and Oct. 6, respectively.
Four Ancient Eight matchups and two battles for Boston bragging rights close out the regular season. The Crimson visit Boston College Oct. 8 and then head to Cornell Oct. 14 before beginning a week-long, three-game homestand.
A highly-anticipated contest against rival, and final four participant Princeton, begins the homestand, followed up by an Oct. 24 meeting with Boston University and Dartmouth Oct. 28. The regular season comes to a close Nov. 5 with a trip to Manhattan to take on Columbia.
