CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard baseball team is set to open the 2018 season with a four-game series at Samford this weekend. The Crimson will kick off with a double-header on Friday afternoon with first pitch set for 3 p.m. EST and the second game beginning 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first. On Saturday, Harvard will return to Joe Lee Griffin Field for a 3 p.m. EST matchup and again on Sunday for a 1 p.m. EST game. Both Friday's and Sunday's games will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network.
The Harvard baseball team was voted to finish fifth in the first Ivy League Preseason Poll, as announced by the conference on Wednesday, Feb. 14. This was the first time that the Ivy League conducted a preseason ranking, soliciting votes from media members from each institution, sports information directors and the national media.
Reigning Ivy champion Yale was the clear leader, garnering 15 first place votes and 125 points. Columbia was selected close behind with 101 points. Dartmouth rounded out the top three, collecting one first place vote and 92 points. Penn was voted fourth (91 points), followed by Harvard (50 points).
Harvard looks to open the 2018 season strong, returning 25 players from the 2017 roster, including starting pitchers Noah Zavolas and Simon Rosenblum-Larson. The Crimson also welcomes nine freshmen, five pitchers, to the roster.

Samford returns much of its 2017 roster, including four starting pitchers and seven position starters. Last season, Samford finished the year with a 33-26 overall record, therefore the Bulldogs have won at least 30 games in 10 of its last 12 years. This season, the Bulldogs have gone 2-2 with wins over #22 UCF and Jacksonville. Samford's starting pitcher for Friday's game, Cody Shelton, earned First-Team All-Southern Conference prior to the season and a trio of Bulldogs were named to the second team.
Harvard will travel cross country next weekend to take on New Mexico State in a four-game series. Games are set for Friday, March 2 at 8 p.m. EST, double-header on Saturday, March 3 beginning at 2 p.m. EST and Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m. EST.
