STOCKTON, Calif. – Former Harvard pitcher Shawn Haviland was named the California League Pitcher of the Week for July 26-August 2. He threw a one-hitter on July 29 against the Lake Elsinore Storm. He finished the week 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA, striking out eight in 7.0 innings, and allowing only one hit. Haviland leads the California league in strikeouts with 128 in 117 innings.
Haviland, who had been called up to AAA Sacramento earlier in the season, improved to 7-6 on the season with a 3.69 earned run average.
He was a league all-star in 2009 but is having his best season to date having already set a new professional mark for strikeouts in a season by surpassing last year’s mark of 121.
In the month of July, batters recorded just a .202 batting average against the former All-Ivy League selection. Overall this season, right-handed hitters are batting just .253 against him.
