CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard softball squared off against Princeton this Saturday afternoon, as the Crimson dropped both games of the doubleheader to start the series with the Tigers.
The second game of the doubleheader saw senior infielder
Finley Payne and junior infielder
Sophie Sun drive in runs, as Sun hit her 10
th home run of the season in the sixth inning. A native of Austin, Texas, Sun now has 27 career home runs, a tally that is tied for third all-time in school history.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
In the series opener between Harvard (19-19-1, 10-6 Ivy League) and Princeton (28-11, 16-1), it was the visitors that struck first in the initial frame with a solo home run, 1-0. Harvard almost drew level in the bottom of the second inning, as sophomore catcher
Quinn Salazar-Stewart roped a leadoff triple into the gap in right center field. From there, Princeton held on to retire the side to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Between the third and fourth innings, Princeton would score three more runs to grow the lead, 4-0. The top of the fifth saw the visitors score three runs to secure the 8-0 victory.
At the plate, Salazar-Stewart tallied two hits in the series opener, as the Chandler, Arizona now has 11 multi-hit performances during the 2026 campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
After a scoreless first inning, Princeton opened the scoring with three runs on four hits in the second frame, 3-0, as the visitors added another run with a solo home run in the third, 4-0.
Harvard battled back in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs, both of them arriving with two outs. First-year outfielder
Sheila Forbes kept the inning alive for Harvard, slapping the first pitch she into shallow left field for a single. Payne put Harvard on the board in the next at-bat, slicing a shot down the right field line for an RBI double, 4-1. Sun brought the Crimson within two, 4-2, on the next at-bat with an RBI single.
Between the fourth and sixth innings, Princeton combined for eight runs to take a 12-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Harvard pulled a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning, 12-3, as Sun hit her 10
th home run of the season. A native of Austin, Texas, Sun is the only active Crimson to hit 10 or more home runs in the multiple seasons.
Princeton would hold on for the 12-3 win, as the Crimson scored its three runs on seven hits. Five different Crimson recorded hits, as Sun led the way by going a perfect three-for-three with two RBIs.
HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS
- Salazar-Stewart recorded her 11th multi-hit performance in the series opener against Princeton. A native of Chandler, Arizona, Salazar-Stewart now has 15 multi-hit showings in her Crimson career.
- Sun hit her 10th home run of the season in the second game against the Tigers, as Sun is the only active Crimson to hit double-digit home runs in multiple seasons.
- Payne now has 97 career RBIs, the second-most amongst active Crimson.
