The Harvard men placed fifth of 19 teams at the Iona Meet of
Champions (Gil Talbot).
BRONX, N.Y. – The Harvard men's and women's cross country teams recorded a pair of top-15 results at the season-opening Iona Meet of Champions Saturday afternoon. The men turned in a fifth-place finish while the women placed 13th overall.
For the men, the class of 2014 led the way as four of Harvard's top five runners were freshmen. Newcomer Maksim Korolev placed 11th overall with an impressive time of 25:31 in the men's 8K event. Classmate Kurt Ruegg crossed the line in 25:59, good for 24th-place, and fellow freshman Aaron Watanabe placed 32nd with a time of 26:06. Rookie Kellen Blumberg was the fourth Harvard finisher with a time of 26:13, good for 42nd overall, and sophomore Stewart Richardson rounded out the top five for the Crimson with a 54th-place finish in a time of 26:19.
Senior Thea Lee was the top finisher for the women's team, placing 61st overall with a time of 23:36 on the 6K women's course. Senior Cara Sprague placed 73rd in 24:08 and freshman Catherine Hasbrouck was right behind in 76th with a 24:09 mark. Senior Jamie Olson (83rd, 24:24) and junior Alison Lee (91st, 24:52) rounded out the women's finishers.
Harvard is back in action Sept. 24 as it travels to Yale for the annual Harvard-Yale dual meet.
