LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Harvard women's water polo team fell behind early and could never make up the difference, as the No. 2 UCLA Bruins topped the Crimson, 18-7, Friday evening at the Spieker Aquatics Center.
Senior Jelena Cyr topped the offense with two goals, while Melissa Balding, Zoe Osborne, Michelle Martinelli, Kalina Grabb and Shayna Price each netted single tallies to round out the scoring. Martinelli added two assists.
The Crimson struggled offensively in the first frame as the Bruins netted six goals. Harvard found the back of the net twice in the opening stanza and once in the second as UCLA pushed the advantage to six at the break.
After the intermission, Harvard started to get into an offensive rhythm, outscoring the Bruins, 3-2. UCLA answered with an explosiv seven goal effot in the final eight minutes to eliminate any hopes of a comeback.
Defensively, Ariel Dukes registered two steals and five saves.
Harvard will conclude its west coast trip against UC Santa Barbara Saturday, March 22 at 3 p.m. EST.
