CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Incoming freshman Yoshi Andersen of the Harvard women's water polo team earned MVP honors and helped the USA Water Polo Women's Junior National Team win gold at the UANA Junior Pan American Championships in Montreal, Canada Aug. 19.
Andersen led the U.S. to a 6-1 record at the event with 14 goals, including two in the 7-6 victory over Canada in the gold-medal match. Team USA rallied back from a two-goal deficit in the opening quarter with four scores in the second to take a 5-4 lead into halftime. After each team was shutout in the third quarter, the U.S. matched two Canadian goals to come up with the 7-6 win. Team USA gained an edge on power plays throughout the match by going 2-of-6, while holding Canada to just 1-of-9 on advantage opportunities.
Andersen also contributed in the matches leading up to the championship. The Laguna Beach, Calif., native turned up her offensive game in the two matches prior to the finale with nine total goals. She had four tallies in a 21-6 rout over Puerto Rico, before adding five more goals to lead the red, white and blue past Brazil, 12-5, in the tournament's semifinal.
