College Park, Md. -- Camille Jania, Samantha Gridley and Hannah Morrill led the Harvard women's tennis team to a 3-3 split in singles play, but the Crimson dropped 2-of-3 doubles contests and fell, 4-3, to Maryland Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson (1-1) dropped the doubles point but built a 2-1 lead early in the match with wins from Jania and Gridley in the first two matches to finish in singles play. Jania and Gridley, who combined to give Harvard its lone doubles win, each won in straight sets. Gridley took down Jordan Hansbrough, 6-1, 6-4, while Jania cruised past Welma Luus, 6-0, 6-0.
Maryland (2-3), which is ranked No. 40 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Assocation poll, followed Harvard's two wins with three straight victories of its own to secure the match. Hideko Tachibana and Kristin Norton each dropped matches after losing extended first sets and Sylvia Li stumbled in a second set tiebreak against Mikele Irazusta.
Hannah Morrill claimed the last singles win of the day with a 6-7, 6-0, 6-4 win over Vroni Van Berlo.
The Crimson hosts Boston College at 5 p.m. Thursday, February 9 in the Murr Center.
