Incoming Freshmen Bolster Crimson’s Repeat Hopes

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Eleven swimmers and divers join the Crimson for the 2009-10 season. Coming from nine different states and countries, the newcomers will contribute to events this year as Harvard seeks its second straight Ivy League title.

Head coach Stephanie Morawski ’92 welcomes the following eleven members to the team:

Clare Foster – Breast/IM, Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn
Volunteered as a swim instructor at Shawmut Aquatic Swim Clinic for six years … Treasurer of National Honor Society … Named American All-Scholastic during sophomore and junior years … Brother, Maxwell, is captain of football and baseball teams at Hamilton College … Enjoys cooking and sewing.

Camille Hendrix – Sprit Free, Austin, Texas/Westlake
Captain of swim team senior year … Named to the TISCA all-region and all-state swim team all four years of high school … Member of the relay teams that hold school record in 200 and 400 free and 200 medley … Held the Texas 5A state record in 200 and 400 free relays in 2007 … Member of National Honor Society sophomore through senior years … Committee chair for Westlake Relay for Life.

Christine Hughes – Breast/IM, Clemson, S.C./D.W. Daniel
Co-captain of high school swim team during senior year … U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier in 100-meter breaststroke … South Carolina Individual State Champion in breaststroke, freestyle and individual medley … Recipient of Wendy’s Heisman award for Daniel High School in 2009 … Received the Lion’s Pride Award in 2009 … Named MVP of swim team all four years … South Carolina High School Sports Report all-state sophomore and senior years … Honored as class valedictorian … Member of the National Spanish Honor Society and the Beta Club … Enjoys photography, baking, traveling and raising Japanese Maple trees.

Ellen Johnson – Sprint Free/Fly, Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge
2008 state champion in 100 butterfly … Named MVP of swim team all four years … Named Mountain Ridge High School Athlete of the Month for December 2008 … Recognized with AIA Scholar Athlete Award 2005-08 … Recipient of the Deer Valley Unified School District Extra Ordinary Achievement Award 2006, ’07 and ’08 …Member of the Athletic Management Team 2007-09 … Brother, Danny, swam at George Washington University … Enjoys baking and interior design.

Courtland Kelly – Diving, Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester
Graduated from Gloucester High School with the highest honors … Member of National Honor Society … Mother, Susan, was a member of the water polo team at Harvard … Father, Chuck, also attended Harvard.

Teagan Lehrmann – Diving, Magnolia, Texas/The Woodlands Prep
TAAPS (Texas Alliance of Accredited Private Schools) diving state champion in 2008 … Valedictorian of high school … National Merit Scholar … Volunteer at Memorial Hermann Hospital … Member of the Math Club and the Senior Spirit Club at The Woodlands … Other interests include baking and wakeboarding.

Carol Lin – Freestyle, Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel
Captained Fox Chapel swim team 2008-09 season … Named MVP 2008 and 2009 … Chosen for USA Swimming’s Diversity Select Camp in 2007 … Editor-in-chief of high school newspaper … Recipient of Princeton Review Outstanding Academic Achievement Award … Pennsylvania Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student scholarship winner … National Merit Award finalist … Congressional Award gold medalist … Brother, Michael ’09, swam for Harvard.

Mackenzie Luick – Breast, Lake Oswego, Ore./Lake Oswego
Named MVP of Lake Oswego High School swim team 2006, ’07 and ’08 … Scholastic All-American 2007-’09 … Finished third in 100-meter breaststroke and fifth in 200-meter breaststroke at the 2008 Short Course Junior National Championships … Holds the Lake Oswego High School record in 100-meter breaststroke … Enjoys traveling, reading and listening to music.

Brittany Powell – Diving, Rockville, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder
Captained diving team junior and senior seasons … Washington Metropolitan Swimming Championship qualifier all four years of high school … Named All-Gazette Diver of the Year in 2008 … Placed first at the Montgomery County high school diving championship and Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Diving Championship senior year … Recipient of the Magruder Top Achievement Award … AP Scholar with Honor … Interests include traveling, singing and movies.

Kelly Robinson – Sprint Free/Fly, Hong Kong/Hong Kong International
Captained swim team junior and senior seasons … Named Female Athlete of the Year at the Hong Kong International School senior year … Represented Hong Kong at the FINA World Cup Swim Competition in Stockholm and Berlin in November 2008, breaking a Hong Kong record and finishing eighth overall in the 50-meter butterfly … Won the B final in 100 fly at the USA Junior Nationals August 2008 … Member of National Honor Society and National Chinese Honor Society … Treasurer for Amnesty International … Father played ice hockey at Iowa State, where he was a captain sophomore, junior and senior seasons … Also enjoys drama productions, traveling and languages.

Caroline Weaver – Back, South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington
Green Mountain Aquatics swim team member for 14 years … Named South Burlington High School Female Scholar/Athlete of the Year in 2009 … Recipient of the 2009 Got Milk? Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year … Competed in the 2008 NCSA Junior National Championship … Graduated Magna Cum Laude … Member of the National Honor Society … Volunteered with the KeyBank Vermont City Marathon … Sister, Katherine, swam at the University of Vermont and holds 16 school and pool records … Enjoys running, singing, drawing and sailing.
