Shutout of No. 7 Stanford Begins No. 2 Women's Squash's Title Defense

Laura Gemmell earned her team-leading 12th win of the season (Gil Talbot).

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 2 Harvard women's squash team opened up its title defense at the the College Squash Association Howe Cup by shutting out No. 7 Stanford, 9-0, Friday morning at the Brady Squash Center on Yale's campus.

The Crimson swept six of the nine matches against the Cardinal to advance to tomorrow's semifinal against No. 3 Penn at 4 p.m.

Harvard wasted little time jumping out to an early lead, winning nine of the first 10 games of the morning session. Megan Murray surrendered just 13 points at No. 9 to topple Carolyn Gillette, 11-4, 11-4, 11-5, while No. 6 Natasha Kingshott was right behind, defeating Ally Huchro, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9. At No. 3, Haley Mendez and Maddy Gill traded the first two games with identical 11-6 wins before the Harvard sophomore won the final two, 11-7, 11-4, to give the Crimson a 3-0 lead.

In the second rotation, No. 2 Laura Gemmell outlasted Kerrie Sample in the first game, 15-13, and took the next two, 11-5, 11-9, to put the Crimson the verge of clinching the match. No. 8 Julianne Chu swept Sarah Haig, 11-7, 11-6, 12-10, to send the Crimson back to the semifinals. Saumya Karki completed the round with an 11-8, 5-11, 11-3, 11-9 decision over Serena Fagan at No. 5 to push the advantage to 6-0.
