Finishing Strong: No. 2 Women's Squash Beats No. 5 Yale, 7-2, To End Regular Season

Isabelle Dowling's win helped shift momentum in the Crimson's favor Tuesday night (Gil Talbot).

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 2 Harvard women's squash team closed out the regular season on a strong note, defeating archrival No. 5 Yale, 7-2, on senior night at the Murr Center Squash Courts Tuesday.

The Crimson (12-1) jumped out to an early 2-1 lead and clinched the match with a sweep of the second rotation, before taking two of the three matches in the final grouping to knock off the Bulldogs for the third straight time and send the four class of 2013 members - Eliza Calihan, Laura Gemmell, Natasha Kingshott and Sarah Mumanachit - out with a win in their final home contest.

In the first set of matches, freshman Isabelle Dowling blanked Katie Harrison, 12-10, 11-7, 11-4, at No. 9 to even up the match at one, while No. 6 Mumanachit outlasted Issey Norman-Ross, 11-4, 11-3, 10-12, 10-12, 11-8, to give the Crimson the lead.

The momentum snowballed into the second rotation for Harvard. No. 2 Gemmell rallied after dropping the first game to beat Katie Ballaine, 7-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-9, and No. 6 Kingshott held off Lilly Fast, 11-8, 11-7, 6-11, 11-4, to put the Crimson on the verge of clinching the win. Megan Murray did just that at No. 8, prevailing against Annie Ballaine, 11-3, 11-6, 8-11, 10-12, 11-7, to earn the all-important fifth point for Harvard.

In the last rotation, No. 1 Amanda Sobhy swept Millie Tomlinson in a rematch of last year's College Squash Association Individual National Championship match, 11-3, 11-4, 11-2, and No. 4 Saumya Karki shutout Gwen Tilghman, 11-7, 11-9, 11-1, to make the final margin of victory five.

Harvard will head to the CSA Team National Championships in New Haven, Conn. with its eye on claiming a second straight national title. Play will begin Friday morning and continue until Sunday afternoon.
