Laura Gemmell was defeated for the first time as a collegian in the champship match Sunday (Gil Talbot).
HANOVER, N.H. – Sophomore Laura Gemmell suffered the first loss of her collegiate career as Millie Tomlinson defeated Gemmell in the Ramsay division of the 2011 CSA Individual National Championship Sunday.
Tomlinson, from Yale, won the first set 12-10, the second 11-3 and capped the win off with an 11-9 third set victory in what was an exciting match. Gemmell is now 32-1 in her two years with the Crimson after going 16-0, while capturing last season's individual title. She finishes 2010-11 with a 16-1 record.
The first round consolation featured two Crimson student-athletes vying to call herself the winner of the 16-competitor bracket. Cece Cortes was able to defeat teammate Natasha Kingshott, 3-0, and earn her fourth win of the tournament.
The individual championship concludes the 2010-11 season for the Crimson. Harvard went 11-2 as a team and finished second at the 2011 CSA National Team Championship.
