CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's soccer, women's volleyball and field hockey begin their 2011-12 athletic seasons today, as all-three squads will compete in road contests.
The women's soccer team heads to Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on the Long Island University Blackbirds. The last time these two teams met was last year, when the Blackbirds visited New Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium. Sophomore Peyton Johnson and senior Melanie Baskind scored both of Harvard's goals as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
The women's volleyball squad is in Atlanta, to compete in the Georgia State Invitational. The host Panthers welcome College of Charleston and Jacksonville State along with the Crimson for a two-day tournament. Harvard will kick off the tournament at 1 p.m. against Charleston. Georgia State will then take to the floor against JSU beginning at 3 p.m. Harvard is slated for two more matches on Saturday facing Gerogia State at 1 p.m. and JSU at 5 p.m.
The Crimson field hockey team heads to Holy Cross. The Crimson has held a decided edge against the Crusaders winning the last four matches between the two squads. Last season, the Crimson scored six goals on their way to a 6-1 victory to open the 2010-11 campaign.
