Shelby Lin is the lone Ivy League representative on the US
All-America squad (Gil Talbot).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Recent graduate Shelby Lin ’14, who helped the Harvard women’s rugby team advance to its first ever USA Rugby National Championship in its first varsity season, has been named to the USA Rugby AIG Women’s Collegiate All-American Team, the organization announced Tuesday. Lin is one of 25 collegiate players to be named to the squad.
Twenty-two schools are represented on the elite squad, but Lin is the only representative hailing from an Ivy League program. The team was compiled for a tour of Canada, where the U.S. squad will take on an All-Ontario team July 18 and 20 in Toronto. More than 100 athletes tried out for the All-American team, participating in regional camps in May and June.
Lin starred for the Crimson in its first season as a varsity program, as Harvard posted a 5-2 overall record in the fall and captured the Ivy League Rugby Tournament championship. The spring season saw Harvard compete in four games, resulting in a 2-2 record. The Crimson led off with a 22-5 win over West Chester, followed by a 56-19 loss to AIC. Harvard rebounded with a 105-0 pounding of Boston College, before dropping a road contest to Penn State, 50-12. Harvard then earned a spot at the Division I championships in just its third year competing at that level, having elevated to Division I prior to the 2011-12 season.
