Women’s Rugby Rolls Past Perennial Power Brown, 57-7
Xanni Brown netted six conversions Saturday in a big win over Brown (Gil Talbot).
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seeking revenge after a narrow, 28-24, defeat last season, the Harvard women's rugby team left no doubt Saturday, powering past Brown, 57-7, in an Ivy League matchup. With the win, Harvard (2-2) picks up its second Ivy victory of the season and first road win of its inaugural varsity campaign.
The Harvard offense was on point throughout the match Saturday, with its usual faces punching in a number of tries on the day. Senior captain Xanni Brown put on a display for Harvard, accounting for more than half of the points on the day for the Crimson. Xanni Brown surged into the team lead for tries on the season with five Saturday, and added six conversions to her point total. With nine tries on the season, she now leads all Harvard players in scoring.
Classmate and fellow captain Brandy Machado was up to her usual tricks, posting a trio of tries for Harvard on the day. Xanni Brown converted two of Machado's tries, and Machado is just one off Brown's season pace with eight scores this year. Anabiet Abasi added another score for the Crimson, marking the third game this season she has posted a try.
After a challenging opening schedule, the Crimson will take a hard-earned week off and return to action Oct. 19, when it hosts Princeton in an 11 a.m., contest at Cumnock Field.
