Evanston, Ill. – Three members of the Harvard wrestling team competed at the 48th Midlands Championship on the campus of Northwestern Wednesday and Thursday. All three Crimson grapplers posted 2-2 records coming off the long break.
Third seed and eighth ranked Corey Jantzen lost his pigtail match to Logan Artis, 4-3, to begin his fourth Midlands experience. Jantzen, who finished third at 133 as a senior in high school, won his next two matches by a combined 9-2. Nick Lester of Oklahoma pulled off the upset in an 11-4 win over Jantzen to knock the Harvard junior out of the tournament.
Sophomore Steven Keith started the tournament off with two good wins, including an 11-0 major decision over Illinois' Logan Artis. Keith earned the seventh seed in the tournament and therefore a meeting with the second seed and second ranked Brandon Precein of Northwestern. Keith wrestled well but came up short in a 6-2 decision. He fell in the wrestlebacks to Rutgers' Matt Fusco.
After falling in his first match to fifth-seed Dan Rinaldi of Rutgers, freshman Cameron Croy record his first win by fall this season, pinning Rob Waltko of Bucknell in sudden victory. Croy added a 7-2 victory over Scott Elliott before falling to Kadeem Samuels of Lehigh, 6-2.
Sophomore co-captain Walter Peppelman was suppose to wrestle but was unable to make it to Chicago because of the storm earlier this week.
Harvard turns its attention to dual meets, hosting Rutgers and Maryland Friday, Jan. 7 at the MAC. The Crimson faces Rutgers at 1 p.m. and Maryland at 7 p.m.
