Wrestling Brings in Six Grapplers for 2010-11 Season

Jay Weiss, the David G. Bunning ’88 Head Coach for Harvard Wrestling, will add six grapplers to his team in the fall. The six members of the Class of 2014 hail from five different states and represent five different weight classes.

The newcomers join a strong squad of returning wrestlers including two-time NCAA qualifier Corey Jantzen, sophomore Shay Warren, junior Walter Peppelman and senior Andrew Knapp, who all return to the mat after at least a year away.

Joe Alie/Franklin, Mass./ Franklin/141 lbs
Played football and baseball as a freshman … Earned varsity letters in cross country and wrestling … Captained wrestling team as a senior … Named outstanding freshman and received the coaches award for wrestling … A two-time Hockomock All-Star and 2010 Academic All-Star … Won section title and placed fourth at states … Team won Division II state title in 2009 and Division I state title in 2010 to become the first team to win championships in two different divisions …  Named cross country rookie of the year … Earned MVP honors on the freshman baseball team and was a two-time game captain on the freshman football team … Member of the National Honor Society … Class vice president … Peer leadership from 2007-10 … Organized school food pantry … Father, Bill, was a four year varsity soccer and hockey player at Bentley, where he was named Sportsman of the Year as a senior.

Three-year starter in football and four-year starter on the wrestling team … Captained football and wrestling teams as a senior … Three-time Tennessean Wrestler of the Year … Four-time Mid-State Dream team member … Named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2009 state tournament … Two-time Fargo All-American … Went undefeated as a sophomore, junior and senior, winning 119 straight matches … Was not scored on during junior and senior seasons … Three-time state champion … Two-time all-region selection in football and 2009 defensive player of the year … Volunteer for the Nashville flood relief .. Youth football and wrestling volunteer coach … Brentwood High School physics student of the year … Named to Wrestling USA 2010 Scholastic All-American team … Father, Jim, wrestled at Tennessee Tech.

Four-year letterwinner in wrestling … Captained the team for two years … Record 100 wins … Three-time firs-team all-conference honoree … Two-time District IX Champion … Plated fourth at Region 3 Championships twice … Won the Newark Academy Tournament … Received Delbarton’s Mike Grey Award in 2010 … Coordinator of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Applachia Mission … Campus ministry retreat leader … Peer leader … Member of the social justice committee … Core member of DAFTA (drug alcohol task force) … Nominated to Global Young Leaders Conference … Selected to attend Congressional Student Leadership conference.

Four-year starter in wrestling and two-year starter in soccer … Three-year wrestling captain … Three-time first-team All-Delco selection … Named wrestler of the year in Delco County in 2010 … Three-time state tournament qualifier … Finished fourth at the PIAA AAA States in 2010 … Compiled 128 career wins … Varsity Club member … Member of the Honor Roll … AP Scholar with Distinction … Rotary Student of the Month in April 2009.

Ian Roy/Poway, Calif. /Poway High School/174 lbs
Four-time varsity letterman … A high school All-American … Two-time Academic All-American … Earned all-league, All-CIF and was a California state placer … California freestyle and Greco state placer and champion … High school won states in 2009 after finishing second in 2007 … Team was four-time league champion and four-time CIF champion … Four-time Masters Champion and 2010 Reno TOC Champions … Finished seventh at the California state meet … Sported a high school record of 135-35 … Received the coaches award twice ... Scholar-athlete … Volunteer in a soup kitchen and worked with autistic children … Aunt Monica Geraldo, played soccer at Notre Dame and professionally … Uncle James and Charles Geraldo were gymnasts at Penn State and Stanford, respectively … Uncle John Geraldo played soccer at Cal State Fullerton.

Sam Waters/Short Hills, N.J./Milburn/125 lbs
Played soccer and wrestled for Milburn High School … Captained the wrestling team as a senior and the junior varsity soccer team as a junior … Four-time district medalist … Four-time all-conference recipient … Finished fourth at the Region 3 Championships … Placed second at the Essex County Championships … Named Milburn Wrestling Rookie of the Year and two time Scholar-Athlete … Received the Miron Award as wrestling MVP … New Jersey freestyle state champion and three-time member of Team New Jersey … Graduated fifth on the all-time wins list with 109 … High school won NJSIAA Group III state title in 2008 and finished second in 2009 … President Scholar nominee … AP Scholar … National Merit Commended Scholar … Received the Eber L.
