Stone Earns 450th Win as Women’s Hockey Dispatches Union 2-0

Mastel and Mullins found the back of the net for the Crimson (Gil Talbot).

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Controlling the puck from start to finish, Harvard women's hockey outskated Union, 2-0, on Friday night at Messa Rink. The win gave Katey Stone her 450th-career victory at the helm of the Crimson (4-17-5, 4-11-4 ECAC Hockey).

Senior Briana Mastel and junior Haley Mullins scored for the visitors, while sophomores Kate Hallett and Kaitlin Tse and freshman Kyra Colbert registered assists in the contest. Freshman Beth Larcom earned her first-career victory and shutout, blanking the Dutchwomen (4-26-1, 1-17-1 ECAC Hockey) with 12 saves on the evening.

Harvard peppered the Union defense with 15 shots in the first period, including four from senior Sydney Daniels, but the teams left for the first break deadlocked at 0-0.  The Crimson outshot the Dutchwomen 38-12 on the evening.

It took just 1:55 in the second period for Harvard to jump in front, as Hallett backhanded a pass across the crease to a waiting Mastel who was able to slam home her second goal of the season. Colbert started the play for her first-career assist, while Hallett tallied her second helper of the season.

The Crimson defense held Union to just one shot on goal in the second period, and stifled Union again in the third, when they tallied only four shots. Mullins doubled the Harvard advantage with a goal at 11:07 in the third, finding the top-left corner with a shot as she fell to the ice. Her ninth goal of the season, Tse picked up her fifth assist.

Harvard takes the ice again on Saturday, Feb. 11 to take on Rensselaer. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. on RPI TV.
