Meet the Crimson: Marissa Gedman
Each week, GoCrimson.com will take an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the members of the Harvard women's hockey team. This week features junior captain Marissa Gedman (Photo: Elan Kawesch)
Why did you choose Harvard?
How can you not? Harvard as an institution embodies everything I want out of a college experience. I came here to be the best at what I love, which is ultimately school, hockey and friendship.
Whom do you model your game after and why?
I've always idolized Angela Ruggiero like any other girl hockey player my age probably did at one point. She's simply the MOST legendary women's hockey player out there, and I'm so thankful to her for everything she did and is still doing for our sport.
Is there any significance as to why you wear your number?
No reason at all actually! I love it though.
What's your favorite pregame meal?
Grilled chicken sandwich.
Do you have any superstitions before getting on the ice?
I always stand by the door and "fist bump" everyone on team when we go out to the ice.
What are three words you would use to describe yourself as a hockey player?
Big, big and huge. Haha just kidding, kinda. I'd say aggressive, strong and resilient.
What/who are you listening to pregame, and why?
LATCH by Disclosure. Song is absolute gold, if you don't know it, you need to.
What's the best part about road trips during the season?
What isn't the best part about road trips? Being away from school and having all your best friends in one hotel; doesn't get any better than that.
Do you have any good stories from a particular road trip?
One time we grabbed a huge pot with a tree in it from one of the lobbys and put it outside Elizabeth Parker's door and ding-dong-ditched her...We expected her to be shocked to open the door to a giant tree, but instead she just took it in as decoration for the weekend.
Where are you most likely to be found in the offseason?
At the rink. What is offseason?
What is your favorite thing about Cambridge/Boston?
The river. It's so beautiful. And Boston sports? Can't compete with that.
What other Harvard team do you enjoy watching as a fan?
Softball! They are so supportive of our team all year and in the spring we like to reciprocate and do the same for them.
If you could travel back in time, when/where would you go?
Eh, this is a tough question....I'm pretty happy where I am. Maybe go back in time to watch my Dad back in his prime playing in the MLB. That'd be pretty cool.
If you could have a superpower, which one would you chose?
Invisibility. Is that creepy to say?
What kind of legacy do you want to leave at Harvard?
Perseverance. If there's anything I want people to remember about me it's that you can't break me. In life, in school, in sports, you just gotta put your head down and grind it out, things will always work out if you put the work in.
