No. 3 Women’s Fencing Gains Big Victory over No. 1 Penn State at St. Johns Invitational

CAMBRIDGE Mass. – No. 3 Harvard women's fencing opened up the New Year with an inspiring win over No. 1 Penn State during the team's first tournament of 2012. Harvard edged the Nittany Lions by a score of 14-13. The Crimson finished the day 2-3 in dual matches.
Harvard stormed out of the gate defeating Penn State in its first dual competition, however followed that up with a series of losses to No. 4 Notre Dame (15-12), Columbia (15-12) and No. 5 Ohio State (21-6). The Crimson ended it's day like it began, defeating No. 6 St. John's 14-13.
Freshman Emma Vaggo and sophomore Alexandra Kiefer were the Crimson's most impressive performers this weekend, both recording an 11-4 record through the five dual matches. Senior Caroline Vloka led the saber grouping with a 9-6 record.
Harvard will not regroup and ready itself for the Ivy League Championships set for Feb. 11-12 in New Haven, Conn.
