Harvard Announces Fencing Schedule for Upcoming Winter Season

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After a fifth-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championships, the Harvard fencing teams will look to remain among the national elite during the 2009-10 campaign, as the Crimson recently announced its schedule for the upcoming season.

With captains Karl Harmenberg and Long Ouyang on the men’s team and Noam Mills and Caroline Vloka guiding the women’s squad, Harvard opens the new season at the Penn State Open Nov. 21-22. The team will then host the Harvard Invitational at the Malkin Athletic Center Nov. 29 before looking to defend its Beanpot titles in December. The women have won the first two Beanpots, while the men’s team captured its first crown a year ago. On Dec. 3, the women’s team will welcome Tufts in the only home dual meet of the season.

After the New Year, Harvard will travel to Queens, N.Y., for the St. John’s Invitational Jan. 24 and then closes out the regular season against Brandeis, Duke and Yeshiva in Waltham, Mass., Feb. 6.

The Ivy League Championships, Part I are scheduled for Feb. 21 at Cornell, while the second half of the conference meet will be held Feb. 28 at Penn. Last season, the Harvard women went 6-0 at the Ivy League Championships en route to its third conference title.

The postseason continues with the NCAA Regionals set for March 14 in Providence, R.I. The Crimson will then look to send its top fencers to the NCAA Championships March 25-28.
