Radcliffe Lights Finish Fall with Strong Showing at Foot of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Radcliffe heavyweight crew was among the top two finishers in all three races while the Black and White lightweights placed in the top two lightweight boats in each race at the Foot of the Charles Saturday afternoon on the Charles River.

Radcliffe heavyweight boats won the novice eight and varsity four events and placed second in the third varsity eight. The Black and White had the fastest lightweight boat in the novice and third varsity races and the second-fastest in the varsity four. The regatta concluded an outstanding fall season for Radcliffe that included runner-up finishes for the heavyweights at the Head of the Housatonic, Head of the Charles and Green Monster regattas and finishes among the top lightweight boats at each event.

"All three events had Radcliffe boats finish in the top two, and that's what this regatta is all about for us," heavyweight head coach Liz O'Leary said. "And the premier event of this race is the novice eight; it is great to take the title for the second year in a row."

Only the Boston College novices finished ahead of Radcliffe in last weekend's Green Monster team competition, but this time the top Black and White entry was 33.6 seconds faster than the runner-up Eagles with a time of 13:14.3 over the 2.3-mile course. The Radcliffe B entry placed 14th in the 23-boat race in 15:21.5. The Radcliffe lightweights took 18th in 16:16.1, more than 13 seconds ahead of the second-fastest lightweight finisher, MIT.

Among 43 varsity fours, the Black and White's A entry was the fastest in 13:45.7. Brown placed second, 20.4 seconds behind Radcliffe's time. Radcliffe B placed 10th in 14:33.6, while the C boat was 31st in 15:18. All of Radcliffe's Boston rivals competed in the regatta, along with Syracuse, Buffalo, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

The Radcliffe lightweight A four's time of 14:51.6 was good for 19th overall and six seconds off the pace of the top-finishing lightweight boat, from Buffalo. The Black and White's lightweight B entry placed 27th in 15:04.7. The C boat also rowed well, despite training together for just a week, and clocked 16:39.

"The margins in the varsity four event were very close," said lightweight head coach Michiel Bartman. "Both the varsity A and B fours raced well and were competitive with each other. The race conditions were tougher for the lightweights at the stretch toward the finish because of the strong headwind, but I was pleased with the results overall."

The Black and White heavyweights finished second to Brown in third varsity eight race. Radcliffe posted a time of 13:54.7, more than 10 seconds ahead of third-place Buffalo. The Radcliffe lightweights, despite entering a boat of almost entirely freshmen, placed fifth in 14:18.3. They were 54.9 seconds faster than MIT, the other lightweight entry in the seven-boat field.
