No. 4 Radcliffe Lights Down No. 5 Bucknell, Fall to No. 3 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J.—The fourth-ranked Radcliffe lightweight varsity eight defeated No. 5 Bucknell and lost to No. 3 Princeton while the novice eight dominated the Tigers at the Class of 1999 Cup regatta Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie.

The lead changed hands three times in a hard-fought varsity race. The Black and White moved in front first, only to lose the lead and recapture it before Princeton went ahead for good around the 1,000-meter mark. Radcliffe sprinted back into contention in the final 250 meters, but the Tigers held on for a 2.3-second win in 7:14.6 to reclaim the Class of 1999 Cup following Radcliffe's win last season.

The Radcliffe varsity eight finished 14 seconds before Bucknell, last season's runner-up in the IRA National Championships. The Black and White second varsity eight raced against the top boats from the other schools and placed fourth.

“It was a quite solid race, and I was proud of the way we raced.” said Radcliffe head coach Heather Cartwright. “Although the outcome didn't go our way, we have a lot to go on moving forward. I also thought the novice eight was exceptionally strong.”

The novices cruised to a 34.3-second victory against the Tigers. The Radcliffe varsity four placed third against two schools that did not field a second varsity eight. The Black and White posted a time of 8:52.5, about nine seconds behind Bucknell.
